The Betta or Siamese Fighting Fish is a hardy and simple fish to keep. They are Anabantoids and have a labrynth organ that they can use to take air from the surface to allow them to breath in low oxygen water. This fish can also tolerate slightly lower temperatures and makes a good selection for bowls and small desktop aquariums. This page will give you detailed information on their care and upkeep. Enjoy your new Betta!
As mentioned above, Betta's can breath atmospheric air from the surface of the water. It is important to select a location for the Betta's home that will not be subject to major swings in temperature. Also, you will want to keep in mind that if the fish is being kept in a relatively small water volume, it can be easily overheated by direct sunlight. A bright area is fine, but avoid windows, doorways, heat/cool vents, etc. High noise levels and vibrations can be stressful for a Betta. Avoid large speakers or areas where there may be a lot of running and jumping activity. Just some basic location considerations to keep your Betta happy and healthy! Some Examples Of Aquarium Placement
Betta, or Siamese Fighting fish come from shallow, slow moving or even still water. They were originally collected from the paddy field's of southeast Asia in what is now Thailand.
Despite a labrynth organ for breathing, it is still important to keep the fish's home clean and the water it is living in in good shape for a healthy fish. Keeping up with regular water changes is important to avoid bacteria and fungal infections in the fish.
If the Betta is in a small bowl and only requires small water changes it will be easiest to simply keep a small container of water for the change in the same room. At Aquatic Creations we produce all types of water for our clients and customers See Here and we even have water for betta homes! Simply bring in your water container to be filled or you can pick up a container at the store. It is inexpensive and a hassle free, no mixing or treating of the water way to ensure that you have the perfect water for your fish.
Betta's are omnivore's and will eat a wide variety of foods. Their upturned or superior mouth's help them to feed at the surface on insects and other floating prey. In the aquarium or bowl they will take most foods readily from the surface and seem to have a particular preferance for worms. There are special food blends specifically formulated for betta's that are housed in bowls. In the community aquarium they will feed on the same foods as the other fish in the community.
Aquatic Creations stocks plenty of foods for your betta. Click here for more information on foods or stop by the store to learn more about aquarium and betta foods and about feeding your fish.
